One thing I might mention,
if you are camping in the park itself there is no charge for
admission. Another thing we found out, is a few miles north of
Nashville on Rt 46 is a park called the Yellowood Forest, also run by the State and
there is no charge. It doesn't have the fancy lodge, but if you
want to get out in nature it is a very nice area.
I can't say enough about Slats Klug and Friends and their
performance on Saturday night. The name of the show, and their
latest album was "My Brown County Home". The songs were
all written by members of the group and focused their attention
on events that occurred in the area in times gone by. Kara wasn't
a regular with the group but was just filling in. However,
everyone was great. Bob and I both love Bluegrass and Country
music and this was both and more. They had a gal that was their
lead singer name of Lauren Robert that gave a "sassy"
performance according to many of the people around us. She wore a
man's hat and played the washboard, along with singing with an
extremely powerful voice. Bob told me it's the first time he's ever seen a
sexy washboard performer. In addition to the performance the
audience was filled with a lot of the locals; artists,
craftspeople, and some of us tourist-type. The audience was
almost as interesting as the performers. There were some that
looked almost as though they had come down out of the hills. I
wanted to check for shoes (just kidding). It was a wonderful
evening, even to the part where the performance over, the
performers bowed to the audience, thanked everyone and left the
stage. Well, the audience wasn't having any of that. We all
started clapping and cheering until the group came back on the
stage. You could tell that they had not anticipated having to do
an encore, because they were up there conferring on what the heck
to do now. They played two more impromptu songs, with Kara
hanging in there until the end, and did a great job. They were
selling t-shirts and cd's, of which I bought both. They had a
great song they do called "Blood Alley Women". It has
reference to a local street in town called "Blood Alley".
It seems that the local women were tired of their men goofing off
on the liars' benches in front of the Courthouse and decided to
teach them a lesson. Wow, be careful guys.
While looking around for things to do and see I came across a
book called Our Brown County. It listed the usual information
about shops, and restaurants, along with shows to see and places
to go. But interspersed with all this was a country-type of
humor. In addition to the local shows there is one theater that
features "well-known" country artists that come through
on their yearly circuit. It is a much more up-close-and-personal
view at the artists than you get in the really big cities with
large auditoriums.
I know that Bob had some real apprehensions coming to Nashville
as he is highly allergic to shopping in short bursts let alone in
any concentrated amounts. But guys, let me tell you that
Nashville is a whole lot more than just shopping. If you look
around there is entertainment galore and just slow down long
enough to sit down and talk with the locals. They are delightful
people, very proud of their rich country heritage.
