Sunday, May 12th
We rose late for Mother's day, catching the continental breakfast
just before closing, and then off for a ride through Carrollton,
and along the river. We then returned to the Festival, to say our
goodbye to Alex and the others we had met.
We stopped to watch
Dan Keith and his juvenile players from the hard core parts of
Cincinnati present life as it might have been for the
"reivers", outlaws who lived along the border between
England and Scotland. It had been some time since I had seen a
school play. It was amusing in its way. Dan, who was now
retired, wanted to do something with the kids on the street, to
keep them out of gangs, and this was his way. We wondered around
for several more hours but clearly the main activities were all
scheduled for Saturday and this was just a continuation of the
same. We soon found that all had been covered and decided to head
out for Madison IN, for a nice Mother's day dinner. We stopped by
the local law and asked where was a good place to eat. They sent
us out of town for several miles to a shopping center, but
nothing stuck Laura's fancy and we soon found ourselves back in
Madison. I had plotted an adventurous route out of Madison toward Rising Sun, over mostly roads with no names, through the south
central hills of IN.
Climbing out of the Ohio river
valley on hairpin curves guided only by the laptop map and its
GPS generated green arrow, which told us to either turn left or
right at every crossroads. We gave right of way to two elegantly
dressed and bearded men driving a two horse buggy. I knew we must
be pretty far off the beaten path, as all those found standing in
the front yard as we passed, would stop and wave as if they had
known us all along. It was a beautiful day and a lovely ride with
the battery in the computer running out just as we pulled back
onto the main road and into Rising Sun. We perused the new
Gambling Boat "Grand Victoria" from the outside and
marveled at the mass of construction going up all around it.
However with nothing completed or open, we moved on to Aurora,
where the "Applewood" caught Laura's eye and we stopped
for a very good buffet dinner, overlooking the Ohio. There was a
nice breeze and we dined outside. One last picture of Laura and
we headed home.
